How to use

  1. Paste the original on the left and the changed text on the right, or drop a file on each side.
  2. Set ‘Compare by’ to Lines, Words or Characters, and View to Side by side or Inline.
  3. Tick Ignore whitespace, case, line endings or blank lines to hide differences you can ignore.
  4. Press n or p to jump between changes, and click ‘⋯ unchanged lines’ to unfold a block.
  5. Use ‘Copy patch’ for a unified diff, or ‘Share diff’ to put both texts into the link.

FAQ

Is the unified (inline) view free here?

Yes, and so is live editing, JSON structural diff and unlimited use. Diffchecker charges for the unified view and real-time editing, and needs an account to share. We have no account and no server, so there is nothing to gate.

Does my text get sent anywhere?

No. The comparison runs in this tab using the diff library bundled with the page. text-compare.com states on its own page that your text is sent to their server. Sharing here uses a # fragment, which browsers never include in HTTP requests, so it cannot appear in any access log.

Why is my whole file marked as changed?

Almost always line endings — one file uses Windows CRLF and the other Unix LF. Our "Ignore line endings" option is on by default to prevent exactly this. If it is still all red, check for a difference in indentation and try "Ignore whitespace".
