What is a 30 minute timer?

A 30 minute timer is an online countdown that runs for exactly 30 minutes and alerts you when it reaches zero. This one is already set when the page opens: press Start or the space bar and it counts down from 30:00, keeps exact time if you switch tabs or lock your phone, and rings until you stop it.

What 30 minutes is good for

Half an hour is the standard slot for a meeting, a lunch break, a TV episode and a daily workout (health guidelines suggest 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week, which is 30 minutes on five days). In the kitchen it is a typical bake for brownies and quick breads and a short braise; at a desk it is one deep-work block before checking messages.

Thirty minutes is long enough that you will probably switch tabs: that is fine, the end time is fixed and the alarm is pre-scheduled on the audio clock, so a background tab on a computer still rings on time. Turn on desktop notifications in the settings to get a clickable alert as well.

Start it in one click

There is nothing to set: the time is loaded, the Start button has keyboard focus on a computer, and the alarm sound, volume and screen settings are remembered from your last visit. If you need a different length, type it into the hours, minutes and seconds boxes or pick another preset below the timer.

It keeps counting in a background tab

The end time is fixed the moment you press Start, so a slow or sleeping tab cannot make it late: whenever the page is drawn it recomputes the remaining time from the clock. The alarm is pre-scheduled on the browser's audio clock and backed by a system timer and a desktop notification, and if the device was asleep when the time came, the page rings as soon as you return and shows how long ago the 30 minutes ended. On iPhone keep the tab on screen, since Safari pauses hidden pages; Keep screen on, which is on by default on phones, prevents auto-lock while it runs.

Alarm, repeat and phone use

Choose Beep, Bell, Digital, Soft, Cuckoo, Chime, Pipe or None and set the volume; all but the cuckoo are generated in the browser and work offline, and the cuckoo is a short clip of about 65 KB fetched once and then kept by the browser. The alarm repeats until you press Stop alarm, Space or Esc, and gives up after 60 seconds. Android phones vibrate as well; iPhones on iOS 17 or later play it even with the silent switch on.

Need a slightly different time?

The 20 minute timer and the 45 minute timer are next; for a full hour use the 1 hour timer. Need 35 minutes? Start this one and press +1 min five times, or type 35 into the minutes box before starting.

Other time tools

For measuring how long something takes, use the stopwatch, which counts up and records laps. For the days and hours until a date, use the countdown. For alternating focus and break periods, the Pomodoro timer runs the whole cycle, and the interval timer repeats work and rest rounds for training. They all share this timer's clock engine, sounds and settings.

How to use

  1. Press Start or Space — the timer is already set to 30 minutes.
  2. Begin your activity. You can switch tabs, and on a phone Keep screen on stops it from locking; the time stays exact.
  3. At zero the alarm repeats until you press Stop alarm; +1 min adds a minute on the spot.

FAQ

How do I use the 30 minute timer?

Press Start or the space bar; the timer is already set to 30 minutes. Cancel and Pause sit side by side under the ring, +1 min and −1 min below them, and the alarm stops with Stop alarm, Space or Esc.

Does the 30 minute timer work when the browser tab is inactive?

Yes. The end time is fixed at Start and the alarm is pre-scheduled on the browser's audio clock and as a notification, so a background tab on a computer rings on time. iPhone Safari pauses hidden pages, so keep the tab on screen there.

Can I use the 30 minute timer on mobile?

Yes. Keep screen on is on by default so the phone does not lock mid-timer, Android phones can vibrate, and iOS 17+ plays the alarm even with the silent switch on.

Is this 30 minute timer free?

Yes, free with no account, login, download or server; the page runs entirely in your browser and only your sound settings are stored on this device.

Does the 30 minute timer drain my phone battery?

Very little. The page updates four times a second only while it is on screen, and there is no network traffic. Keep screen on costs the most, because the display stays lit; switch it off in the settings if you will hear the alarm anyway.
