FAQ

Why can’t temperature be converted with a simple multiplier?

Temperature scales do not share a zero point, so the conversion is affine, not proportional: 0 °C is 32 °F, not 0 °F. This converter uses °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and its inverses, and checks every input against absolute zero.

Is a US gallon the same as an imperial gallon?

No. A US gallon is 3.785411784 litres and an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.54609 litres, about 20% larger. The same applies to pints and fluid ounces, so US and imperial units are listed separately here.

Is a gigabyte 1,000 or 1,024 megabytes?

Both conventions exist. Decimal units (kB, MB, GB) are powers of 1,000 and are what storage manufacturers and network speeds use; binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) are powers of 1,024 and are what most operating systems report. This converter shows both groups side by side.
