- United States — 15–20% is expected in restaurants and bars.
- Japan — not customary; a tip may be politely refused.
- Korea — not customary; service is included in the price.
- United Kingdom — 10–12.5%, often already added to the bill as a service charge.
- France — service is included by law; people usually just round up.
- Australia — not expected; staff are paid a full wage.
- India — 5–10% in restaurants, when a service charge is not already added.

FAQ
How much should I tip?
In the United States 15–20% is standard at restaurants and bars, with 18% a common default. Norms differ sharply elsewhere: tipping is not customary in Japan and Korea, service is usually included in France, and 10–12.5% is typical in the UK. The tipping-norms table on this page lists the common figures by service type and country.
Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
Conventionally the tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount, since sales tax is not part of the service. This calculator uses pre-tax by default and has a toggle for post-tax, which produces a slightly larger tip.
How is an uneven split handled?
When the total does not divide evenly, the remainder is spread one minor unit at a time, so a $10.00 bill split three ways shows $3.34, $3.33 and $3.33. The per-person amounts always add back up to the total exactly.
